The FAQ aims to answer questions related to SESKU Academy rather than general questions on Boxing/ Martial Arts or Self Defence.

Questions & Answers

Why Martial Arts and Boxing as opposed to Aerobics?

Martial Arts and Boxing offers all the benefits of Aerobics & similar types of exercise but has many other benefits above & beyond what an Aerobics class can offer. These benefits include self defence, discipline, confidence, self esteem, co-ordination, technical expertise etc. Our Instructor and coach's care about their students first & foremost.

Why SESKU Academy, as opposed to other Martial Arts/Boxing classes?

Not only does SESKU Academy offer quality & expert instruction in Martial Arts & Boxing and all its related areas (Self Defence & Fitness), but we also offer longer sessions than most other clubs we believe that both Aerobic & Anaerobic warm up is required to condition the body for the demands of Martial Arts & Boxing.

Is Muay Thai & Boxing suitable for women?

Yes, for both men and women we train using skill and movement rather than just brute force. That, combined with the precision, timing & focus you learn through training create a powerful force that anyone can use, no matter what the size or gender.

I don't fancy Martial Arts, what can you offer?

For those that don't really fancy our superb Martial Arts training, we offer quality Boxing training and self defence based training, suitable for anyone.

I fancy doing a bit of each, how can you help?

With our different options you can select to train at only that which you desire or your schedule allows. For example, you may want to do some Martial Arts & extra fitness or just a Boxing class & Self Defence! We cater for it all.

Don't you teach Self Defence as part of the Martial Arts & Boxing training?

Indeed we do, all our students learn a special self protection syllabus as part of their standard training. We also include self protection in our grading syllabus.

So what's Self Defence taught for Muay Thai & Boxing?

The Self Defence techniques are geared towards the general public and suitable to those with either normal or low fitness levels and no previous martial arts or boxing experience. The Self Defence taught as part of the classes are geared towards practicing simple effective techniques to benefit the students immensely.

Will practicing Muay Thai or Boxing get me fit as well?

Indeed it will. Not only will it get you fit, it will tone your body & help you lose weight, build confidence and increase energy levels.

So what's the difference between fitness at SESKU Academy & Gym Fitness only classes

The difference is the level of intensity & self discipline expected of students. For example, students cannot just take a break whenever they want, whereas those in a Fitness class can. We will push you hard, but, the training is meant to be fun as well as rewarding.

What is Combat Fitness?

Combat Fitness is based on martial arts & boxing training, in order to get you fit. This can be pad work, bag work, aerobic & anaerobic exercise, flexibility work, circuit training and sparring used for run up to competition.

Do you do trial classes?

Unfortunately, we do not offer trial classes; we recommend you watch a class to see if you feel SESKU Academy is right for you. Before becoming a member of the Academy. We will require an enrolment form to be filled in, on you starting your first class.

What should I wear?

Simply wear jogging bottoms or shorts and T-shirts. We recommend shorts and T-shirts for the training at the Academy. You Train in whatever you feel comfortable wearing.

How do I compare the quality of S.E.S.K.U. Academy & other martial arts and Boxing clubs?

Unfortunately, many people (especially parents) sign up for classes at the first club they visit. But quality varies wildly. We invite you to firstly watch our classes and compare our students to others (as the students are the real measure of quality within a Martial Arts or Boxing club). Finally, if visiting other clubs don't sign anything until you have made comparisons. Don't be fooled by special intro offers etc, as you may regret it later.

I'm not very fit; can I still learn Martial Arts and Boxing?

Yes, your fitness will improve no matter what your starting level. You may ache a bit after your first few classes, but this is just your body adjusting and will eventually fade. If you are worried (or have a medical condition) you should consult your doctor prior to commencement of training. Please disclose any medical condition on our enrolment form.

Am I too old to learn?

No, contrary to popular beliefs, there is no age limit to when people can start training. Many believe if you don't start training at 5 years old it's too late, but that's not true. The average age people start combat training is actually 21. However, it is not set in stone and we have students who have started at over 40 years old and made quick progress & enjoy it immensely.

What age can children start?

Children can start at SESKU Academy at age 5. However, all children start on approval. This means that we monitor them and see if they can cope as not all children can manage the 1 hour lessons we offer for children, when so young. It's not an indicator of the child's ability, just a fact of life and as we want your child to get the best out of their training, and be safe then if this is the case, we may ask you to bring them back in six months instead. Be warned though, unlike many other clubs that claim 'Children' classes that are usually 45 minutes of running around playing games with very little constructive training or discipline, classes at SESKU Academy are proper Martial Arts and Boxing Classes, just for young people. They are fun, but disciplined properly. Feel free to ask any of our parents what they think of our children's classes and feedback on how their children have made progress.

I'm not all that flexible, and have been told Muay Thai involves mostly high kicking techniques, is this the case?

Incorrect. Though Muay Thai is famous for a beautiful and powerful array of kicking techniques. The low kick is one of the most effective and easy to master. Muay Thai includes many other 'non-kicking' techniques as well. From hand strikes, to joint locks to throws and close quarter combat techniques, in fact kicking is just one part of the system, but often overly emphasised for publicity etc. As for flexibility, you don't have to be flexible to begin with, as flexibility training is included, in our training schedule but even the most non-flexible person can practise Muay Thai because of the other easier techniques involved and we teach you to utilise what you have, to your advantage as well, as all students are different.

Do I have to spar during Training Sessions?

No, at SESKU Academy we recognise some people just want to learn a form of self defence there are different levels of students. Please make your Instructor or coach aware of what you want to get out of the training as not to be held back from or put sparing.

Am I conditioned to train in Boxing?

You will build up your fitness and conditioning over weeks/months of regular training in both Aerobic & Anaerobic exercises. This along with stretching and body weight exercises and an explosive power endurance training program will help you progress to being conditioned for the demands of Boxing.
